Emirates flights may be capped by the German government to 63 per week in order to protect Lufthansa, the national carrier. So, the ugly face of protectionism doesn't just show itself in third world countries, but also in so called first world countries like Germany and elsewhere.
Spare a thought for Singapore Airlines - for years they have been trying to get slots to fly the lucrative east-Australia to west-USA route....now it looks like Virgin Blue's
V Australia airlines will be flying the route from late 2008 - subject to USA regulatory approval. The name V Australia Airlines comes from a competition which included entries like "Randy Roo airlines", "Choo Choo Flying Big Blue" and "Didgeree Blue" (my personal favourite).
South Africa is a small country with 2 main business centres - Cape Town and Johannesburg (the Durbanites, and Bloemies may not agree with that!). Many a South African find themselves regularly commuting on
flights to Johannesburg and back, plying their trade in the 2 major centres.
Today I join the masses (done it so many times I've lost count), "bussing" myself up on a flight to Johannesburg.
With the torrential rain in London (they haven't even had their traditional 1 day of sunshine!) London's Luton airport was flooded, and those catching
Monarch flights (Monarch are based in Luton) had to swim half the way - there was road chaos outside the airport with late passengers being diverted onto later Monarch flights.
Confused, sick and wrong, the
Glasgow Airport Terrorist Attack. Little doubt if you go back to these fellas formative years, there were some dodgy examples set for them by their caregivers - the capability to carry out these kind of actions I believe is instilled in one from a very young age.
